The Interview - Stuart Stromin
www.stuartstromin.comTell us a little about yourself and what got you into writing.
I am an award-winning writer and filmmaker, originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, but I live in Los Angeles. I was a published poet at an early age. I studied literature at Rhodes University, South Africa, the Alliance Francaise de Paris, and then I went to film school at UCLA.
Where do your ideas come from?
My ideas often stem from delving into the deeper, darker aspects of the human psyche. I don’t flinch from taboo subjects, including race, religion and sexuality, where so much fertile material is ripe for exploration. It is never about me seizing an idea; rather the idea gets hold of me, and demands that I write about it.
What is subspace about?
subspace explores characters overwhelmed by their own obsessions and fetishes, to the point of self-destruction.
What genre are your books?
I am all over the place. I recently had a story accepted by a horror publication, and informed the editor that I was not a horror writer, and received the response, “Yes, but we’ve read your story.” Comedy, suspense, drama, politics, crime, erotica are interesting to me, and I write novels, short stories, poetry, song lyrics, screenplays, and the odd essay. My latest crime fiction novel is called Wild Cards (Close2theBone Publishing), my latest book of poetry is Sea of Troubles (Bottlecap Press), and my latest collection of short stories is subspace (EMP Publishing).
How has subspace been received? Is there a shock factor?
I hope that behind the shock, we discover the humanity.
