The Interview - Roger E Pedersen

How did you become an author and get published? Share your experience.

Five years ago, my division at work was relocated, leaving me without a job. So no job and no income to pay my mortgage. I lost my house, had my partner leave me, and my car battery caught my car on fire.

I read that "Joanne (JK) Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, was as poor as you could get in modern Britain without being homeless. She was living on state benefits and did her writing from a coffee shop that would let her sit as long as she wanted while only buying one cup of coffee."

Unlike Rowling, I had to move into a nearby NY City homeless shelter with my laptop; I read Forbes magazine, saw the first Shazam film, and read an article in American Life. These three items were about "SuperPower: The Ability to Fly or to Become Invisible." I researched that concept, and no one had written a book discussing this extremely popular question.

Instead of watching TV in the homeless shelter before and after their provided lunch, I started writing the first book.

Describe the [book/series] in 10 words or less for people who are just learning about it.

Thomas Crowne stole one masterpiece. Professor Steele takes them ALL."

SuperPower Series: Unleash Your Extraordinary Abilities!

Would you like readers to have any specific takeaway from your book?

The series is about our world with people having special abilities and how they discover and use them.

I am attempting to answer Forbes and the Shazam film question by starting with only the ability to fly or to become invisible (book #1), then expanding in the following books to two new unique abilities like time traveling, shapeshifting, telekinesis, and mind-control.

Editors and fellow authors have told me that I cannot write like this, but every TV show I have seen is like a unique chapter, which I call a dossier, like being a detective. Stories need well-defined, rich characters, so I create their dossier or story. I write each book as follows: Prologue or first chapter and the last chapter. Now, all I need to do is connect them.

Most of the stories are things that happened in my life, my relative's life, or seen on TV or in films, which helps my readers who are playing my book series’ games.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?

Humorously, I rarely type, so the Five SuperPower book series was first created using a speech-to-text cell app. Then, the text was emailed to me, placed into Word, spell-checked, and Grammarly to fix the grammar.

I do not plan out a chapter; I talk to my cell phone for hours and get it all into Word, then, like a sculptor, keep chiseling until the rock becomes Rodin's The Thinker. Listening to the read-aloud function in Word helps as hitting the hammer against the chisel.

What other hobbies do you have outside of writing?

Roger is not just a talented writer but a man of diverse interests. With an advanced degree in Computer Science Software Production, he is also a US Chess Life Candidate Master. His love for adventure is evident in his enjoyment of cruising on Carnival, visiting the Florida and California theme parks, and seeing blockbuster movies weekly.

Before his foray into writing, Roger was a top computer game designer and developer. His expertise in this field is evident in the SuperPower series, where readers can play three games as they progress through each book. These games involve identifying the referenced movie, book, or music, such as when Apollo Steele, the best man at his twin brother Rocky's wedding, quotes, 'Your 'Pretty Woman' has become 'The Runaway Bride.' Both are Julia Roberts and Richard Gere movies.

In addition to writing the SuperPower book series, Roger E. Pedersen has written the script for book 1, 'Deal of the Art,' which can be optioned and viewed along with the other books on StoryRocket.com.
