The Interview - Nicole LaBrocca
nicolelabrocca.comWhen you're working on a book and a new idea pops up, should you pursue it immediately (also known as 'UP syndrome') or finish your current project first? What do you think is the best course of action?
When a new idea strikes while I’m working on a current project, I jot down notes for that new concept but stay focused on finishing the current work. It’s easy to get distracted by the excitement of a fresh idea, but I’ve found that completing one project helps maintain momentum and keeps me from spreading myself too thin while ensuring I meet my deadlines.
That said, I absolutely believe in capturing those new ideas right away. Writing them down allows me to keep the inspiration alive without losing sight of my current goals. Once I finish the project at hand, I can dive into the new idea with fresh energy and enthusiasm. Balancing focus with creativity is key, and this approach helps me stay productive while still nurturing my imagination.
Tell us what you enjoy most about writing [genre].
I love the freedom that writing romance and fantasy romance allows me. It's a chance to create entirely new worlds, filled with magic, mythical creatures, adventure, and, of course, love. This blend allows for heightened stakes and deeper connections, making the love stories feel even more intense and meaningful. I love crafting worlds where the impossible becomes possible, and where characters can navigate their feelings amidst fantastical challenges
One of the most rewarding aspects of writing romance is the opportunity to create hopeful and uplifting stories. I love the idea of giving readers a chance to escape their own realities and lose themselves in a world where love conquers all.
Do you identify with your main character or did you create a character that is your opposite?
While a piece of me undoubtedly resides in each character, I wouldn't say I directly identify with my main character. Instead, I think of them as extensions of myself. My characters often embodies qualities I admire or aspire to, such as courage, resilience, or empathy. However, they also grapple with flaws and vulnerabilities that I may recognize in myself or others.
I think it’s natural to draw from personal experiences, emotions, and perspectives when creating a character. That said, I also enjoy exploring traits that are quite different from my own. This allows me to explore new perspectives and push the boundaries of my imagination.
Describe the [book/series] in 10 words or less for people who are just learning about it.
Magical realms, epic adventures, and passionate romances with mythical creatures.
Have you ever experienced writer’s block? How did you deal with it?
Yes, I’ve definitely experienced “Writer’s Block.” When it happens, I find it helpful to take a break and do something to take my mind off of writing. Whether it’s going for a walk, reading a book, or engaging in a hobby, stepping away can provide a fresh perspective and renewed energy.
What can we anticipate from you moving forward?
My readers can anticipate a continued exploration of the fantasy world I've created in the Shadows and Smoke series. I'm excited to delve deeper into the lore, introduce new characters, and further explore the dynamics between the inhabitants..
In addition to the main series, I have plans for some novellas that will offer more background stories on characters and pivotal moments.
I'm also considering some spin-offs that will expand the universe even further, introducing new characters and settings while maintaining the magical essence.
