The Interview - Mark Alexander
Marksbooks.GoDaddysites.comHow did you become an author and get published? Share your experience.
I have always wanted to write a book but during my working years could not find the time. Now retried, I decided to take the plunge. Looking at the traditional methods of using a publisher was too costly. So I began self-publishing and have enjoyed that experience.
When you're working on a book and a new idea pops up, should you pursue it immediately (also known as 'UP syndrome') or finish your current project first? What do you think is the best course of action?
For me I’m focused on the material I’m writing. If an idea comes up, I’ll make some notes and resume the current novel.
Which character do you enjoy writing the most as a writer and why? If choosing a favorite character is like choosing a favorite child, which character do you find requires the most attention and detail from you as a writer?
Tough question. I put some of myself into each character. Whether that be faults or strengths. As well it offers me the ability to add my sense of humor to the characters.
Can you explain your writing process? Do you prefer to create an outline and plan beforehand, or do you prefer to write more spontaneously and organically?
My writing style is a hybrid. While I do choose a subject, plot, and plan character names, much of it is organic, and the plot evolves as I write.
Tell us what you enjoy most about writing [genre].
I write historical fiction and have always loved the medieval era. Visiting Europe and seeing the medieval architecture captured my imagination.
Have you been able to incorporate your previous experience in [jobs/education] in your writing?
Now retired, my previous employment offer me the chance to write industry articles and create a newsletter for our clients. I have always loved educating people and my books hopefully will educate as well as entertain.
Would you like readers to have any specific takeaway from your book?
I hope e reader learns something about history after reading my books.
Have you ever experienced writer’s block? How did you deal with it?
I have. I watched a series on MasterClass by Dan Brown and his advice was to just put something on the page. Even it you rewrite the entire passage tomorrow. You must continue to write through the block.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I enjoy watching shows about archaeology and medieval history.
Was there anything you had to research for the book?
Writing historical fiction I always spend time researching the period in which the book will take place. I try and learn all I can about the real people that lived during that era since I will include them in my books. This also allows me to transport the reader to that time period.
Did you have any say in the cover design?
I also am artistic venturing into woodcarving, calligraphy, stained-glass making, and other hobbies during my lifetime. I create all my covers using graphics software.
What can we anticipate from you moving forward?
My recent books have focused on well-known myths and legends, and putting a different spin on the story. I think, at some point, I’d like to write a series.
How long did it take you to write this book?
The process takes about 6-8 months, after the initial research. But, as I mentioned, the story evolves as I write and additional research is usually required.
What other hobbies do you have outside of writing?
I enjoy fly fishing and golfing.
