Eco-fiction, adventure stories for children, aged 9-12 (Middle grade), based in Shetland, Scotland.
As an author, what critique has been the most challenging for you to receive? On the other hand, what compliment has been the most rewarding?
Critiques from family and friends are the most challenging! A child that I don't know loved my book and asked his godmother if S. J. Barratt had written any more books.. Love that kid!
What can we anticipate from you moving forward?
A second book next Spring! Living at the Edge of the World - Spring. Watch this space!
Did you always want to be an author? If not, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I have wanted to be a journalist and an actor but never made the grade for various reasons. Now by being an author, I guess I can combine the two - creating and bringing characters to life and putting stories in front of people ...
Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what kind of music do you like to listen to?
I don't as I like to concentrate BUT I do love music and to get me in the mood of Shetland islands, Scotland where my stories are set I listen sometimes to Shetland reels, fiddle music. My second book takes place during Spring and the skylark is the symbol of the start of spring... I listened yesterday to Ella Fitzgerald singing Sky lark... a beautiful jazz song.
