stevehartshornadventures.comHow do you know so much about the exotic locations you write about?
Simple I was raised in the Dominican Republic, lived in Jamaica, spent twenty years traveling to Indonesia and past many a week in New Mexico. All those memories hopefully bring the locations to life for you.
How much of Steve Hartshorn is bases on you?
Ha ha, first let me just say that all the atmosphere and ocean diving stories are mostly my experiences. That said my job as an author is to conflate reality and fiction. The best part of writing is the fun of embellishing.
How long have you been writing?
I suppose like many writers I have been writing in my mind for most of my life. Over the years I wrote bits and pieces of many of the novels. After a wonderful life of traveling and working in many earthly locations I retired, and organized my life into the stevehartshornadventures.com The first five novels have been published in just over a year.
Who is Steve Hartshorn?
Wow, great question. Steve is the synthesis of the books and television programs and movies that brought me pleasure throughout the years. I guess the most influential television show was the Rockford Files. The plots and self effacing humor was an inspiration to me as an author. Hence the lovable loser in Steve. By combining my life experiences with my love of action novels and tv I have built Steve into a complete character who when placed in any situation writes the novels by himself.
What writers influenced you?
That my friend is a long list , I started with Raymond Chandler and James Crumbly. Then I discovered Donald E Westlake and my idol Carl Hiaasen. Elmore Leonard, Lee Child and C j Box are my latest favorite's. Pretty much all crime fiction and some procedurals are in the mix. Humor like Janet Evanovich and Laurence Shames weigh in as well.Tony Hillerman. Randy Wayne White and so many more.
You seem to have a lust in your novels for the Caribbean why is that?
Well I was taken to the

What is the best advice you can give an aspiring writer?
Number one Write, Write, Write. Learn from your mistakes but write. Second is a lesson I learned from an interview of Elmore Leonard. "Know your character so well that he/she can lead you through any situation. The character will write the novel for you." I hope that answers your question...
